At the southernmost tip of the Mexican penninsula, Baja California, a distinctive rock formation "el arco" provides a visual gateway between the Pacific Ocean to the west and the Sea of Cortez to the east. Located just south of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, this is a popular sailing and marine sightseeing destination. In spring, whale watching is very popular in this area, as large pods of grey whales spend the winter months there, after a long migration from the far northern Pacific to Mexico. They give birth to their young in the warmer waters off Baja in the Sea of Cortez, before making the long journey back to their summer feeding grounds off Alaska and northern Russia/Siberia.
