Half Dome is a granite dome in Yosemite National Park, located at the eastern end of Yosemite Valley — possibly Yosemite's most familiar sight. The granite crest rises more than 4,737 ft (1,444 m) above the California valley floor. Once thought to be unclimbable, it is ascended these days by thousands of hikers annually who follow an 8.5 mile trail that culminates in a final ascent using metal cables.
From the ground, the granite appears to be missing some of its face, hence its name as the Half Dome, but in reality, it does have mass around all edges. The image of Half Dome is on California's state quarter that was issued by the U.S. Mint in 2005
